Abstract
Illness and pain are an inevitable part of childhood. Inadequately managed pain may result in a host of detrimental neurobiological, cognitive, and behavioral consequences. This entry focuses on acute pain that is associated with traumas and treatment‐related procedures, persistent pain following surgery, pain related to chronic illness, and primary pain disorders in childhood and adolescence. Cognitive–affective aspects of pain, illness, and disability, as well as the role of parents in the context of pediatric pain and illness, are also discussed.
