Abstract
Adolescence is an important development period for humans across the globe. Biologically this time period is full of physical, hormonal, and cognitive changes. The social contexts in which adolescents are embedded (e.g., racial/ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and political) shape the social experiences (parent–adolescent relationship, school experience, peer relationships) during development as these biological changes unfold within each adolescent's unique socioecological niche. Adolescents in Western countries (e.g., Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom) are typically more influenced by individualistic values of independence than by collectivistic values of interdependence, and will prioritize individual achievement over group achievement. However, culture does not exist within a vacuum, and most countries, even those with high of levels of individualism on average, are not absent of collectivistic values. In fact, many cultural groups within individualistic countries and cultures focus much more on collectivistic values, especially immigrant groups with strong ties to their home or ancestral collectivistic culture.
