Abstract
Once the International Olympic Committee (IOC) got past the complications of the bidding process for 1984, politics, especially Cold War politics, in the Olympics appeared to abate. It was a welcomed rest for the IOC. During the period from 1969 to 1978, the principle years of the bidding processes discussed in this study, the IOC weathered the boycotts, the massacre in Munich (1972), the dissolution of a unified German team in favor of teams representing the Federal Republic of (West) Germany and the (East) German Democratic Republic, and the continued problems with the two-China issue. This latter issue crescendoed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where the Canadian government made things even harder by refusing the admittance of athletes from Taiwan at the request of the People's Republic of China.KeywordsOlympic GameGerman Democratic RepublicLake PlacidInternational Olympic CommitteeMedal CountThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
