Abstract
The article deals with the documents, that allow to identify and resolve a systematic error in the identification of two settlements in L’viv land of Rus’ Voivodeship – the villages of Zheniv (Żeniow) and Shaniv (Szaniow), which are often equated in the scientific literature. In the second half of the 16th century these villages had different owners: the first village was owned by the families of Stefanowicz and Czarnowski, the second – lease-holded by the family of Pieczychojski. The acts, that accumulate toponymic information, in particular the possession act and the demarcation act, were used for verification. The first act revealed, that granted in 1566 (again in 1569) Zheniv wasteland shortly thereafter became the eponymous village. The place names, mentioned in the document (Hlynyany town, Baluchyn village, Poltva river, Kutkir road), confirm this. Thanks to the second source (the demarcation act of 1548 of the private estates of the Czebrowski family and the crown village of Shaniv, lease-holded by Pieczychojski), the approximate location of Shaniv was identified. It was a separate settlement, first mentioned in the 15th century and actually disappeared in the first quarter of the 17th century. as a result of unknown reasons (probably after the Tatar attack). This is indicated by an extract from Shaniv’s lustration of 1628, founded in the L’viv city court acts, where the village was called „devastated”. Shaniv was located between the villages of Dmytrovychi and Glukhovychi (closer to the last) on the site of the later placed settlement of Ostriv (Ostrow [Szaniowski]). Thus, our study demonstrates how important it is to use the acts (especially, ones that accumulate toponym information) to reproduce a network of settlements and locate it in a situation, where there is no maps. The article is accompanied by the publication of the act of demarcation (1548), the granting of the Zheniv wasteland (1566), and the lustration of the Shaniv wasteland (1628).
