Abstract

Brain development begins early in gestation and is prolonged, continuing until well into the third decade of human life. Development begins early in utero, and by 7 weeks the human nervous system has begun to resemble what it will eventually look like. Most neurons are born before birth but connections continue to form at a rapid rate for several years before an extensive period of neuronal and synaptic pruning begins. The developing brain is highly responsive to many experiential factors, beginning with preconception experiences of the parents, gestational experiences, and postnatal experiences, especially during early childhood and adolescence.
