Abstract
Vincent-Pierre Jutras s’impose de son vivant comme une figure d’autorité reconnue, à titre de curé de Tingwick et de Baie-du-Febvre. Patriote convaincu, il documente abondamment le français canadien traditionnel, qu’il défend durant près de deux décennies. Dès 1902, il collabore activement aux travaux de la Société du parler français au Canada, qui lui décerne par ailleurs un prix prestigieux en 1911. En 1918, il termine la rédaction du Parler des Canadiens français, un manuscrit de quelque 400 pages qui compile plus de 1 500 expressions. Après le décès de Jutras, le linguiste Adjutor Rivard et le folkloriste Luc Lacourcière tentent en vain de publier l’ouvrage, dont ils perçoivent l’incontestable valeur documentaire. Le présent article cherche à faire connaître cette oeuvre, dont une édition critique est en cours de préparation.
