Abstract
La légende de la chasse-galerie occupe une place privilégiée dans la culture québécoise. La version qui circule de nos jours est une adaptation d’une légende de l’ouest de la France qui a perdu le caractère effrayant de la croyance d’origine dans le processus d’appropriation qui s’est effectué au Québec. Complétant l’étude qu’en ont faite les spécialistes du folklore, l’article chasse-galerie rédigé pour la deuxième édition du Dictionnaire historique du français québécois précise l’origine de l’appellation chasse-galerie et la distinction entre la version reçue de la légende et la version adaptée. Elle met en évidence le développement sémantique qu’a connu ce mot dans la langue populaire et la place que la légende occupe dans l’imaginaire québécois. Cette monographie de chasse-galerie fournit l’occasion de rappeler l’importance des sources reflétant la langue orale dans le corpus de référence des dictionnaires de langue québécois.
