Abstract
Cet article explore l’identité du soldat Patrick Riel, héros de la Grande Guerre, qui, selon plusieurs sources de l’époque, est rapporté comme un parent du chef métis Louis Riel. Nous y discutons l’importance de la parenté symbolique dans le façonnement historique de l’identité métisse dans l’ouest du Québec, de même que l’importance qu’occupe ce type de parenté au sein des discours de type ethnonational conjuguant de façon originale des éléments culturels autochtones et européens. Le cas de Patrick Riel problématise en outre les thèses voulant que l’identité métisse fut simplement assimilée par l’identité canadienne-française ou algonquine dans la région de l’Outaouais.
