Abstract

The main purpose of the article is to analyze the specifics of commercial advertising in the 1960s on the material of the magazine «New Days» (Toronto). Research methodology is defined by its purpose. Content analysis has been applied as a systematic method that has provided a vision of quantitative and qualitative linkages in the information space of the Ukrainian diaspora. With the help of qualitative content analysis it was investigated the correlation of the content elements, the role of various factors in the advertising text, in the information space as a whole. The monitoring of the press made it possible to trace the qualitative characteristics of the periodical publication, since the selection of promotional materials, which were made for a certain period of time, certifies the editorial tactics. Research results. It has been found out that commercial advertising prevails quantitatively in the magazine «New Days» (almost all groups of goods and services are represented, except for the advertising of medicines, tobacco, weapons, cars). It was reviewed, how Ukrainian diaspora perceived the fact of the «UKRAINSKA KNYHA» shop advertising, which sold art goods and books from Soviet Ukraine. The features of functioning of self-advertising are distinguished, in particular the sale of annual sets of the magazine «New Days», the illustrated monthly magazine for children «Sunflower», book production of the publishing house «New Days», as well as the presence of hidden advertising of the subscription. It is noted that verbal component prevails in advertising, the role of pictures and drawing is negligible. It has been found out that the standard of phrase, reminder, the role of emotional factor dominate among the principles of construction of advertising; such marketing ploy is used to prepare the consumer for the appearance of the product on the market. Conclusions. The research results testified that commercial advertising of the magazine «New Days» (Toronto) has covered virtually all areas of goods and services in the middle of the twentieth century. The role of the national aspect is mentioned here and there in the advertising texts. The importance of the article is due to the need of study and assimilation of editorial publishing experience of Petro Volyniak.
