Abstract
This report provides detailed petrological study of the upper Cree Member sandstone reservoirs in the Cohasset A-52 well of the Scotian Basin. Textures were studied from backscattered electron images from a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Minerals were identified by their chemistry using energy dispersive spectroscopy by SEM and by electron microprobe. Reservoir sandstones comprise principally river-mouth turbidites and cross-bedded shore-face sandstones. K-feldspar is makes up >10% of the sandstone. The sandstones show the same paragenetic sequence of diagenetic minerals as deeper in the stratigraphy, but compaction and pressure solution of quartz is less prominent. Late hot saline fluids precipitated sphalerite. Glaucony-glauconite and coated grains with berthierine, siderite and francolite are reworked from the common transgressive units by erosion in flood-stage river channels and are deposited in river-mouth sandstones. Glauconite is most abundant in cross-bedded shoreface sandstones.
