Abstract
Un portrait-robot des natifs de France à Montréal, construit par jumelage de données des recensements de 1881, 1891, et 1901, nous signale leur jeunesse à l'arrivée et une large gamme de métiers et de niveaux de vie. Cette petite population se distingue de l'ensemble canadien-français représenté par un échantillon patronymique. L’apport de sources plus variées pour des personnalités du milieu théâtral fait apparaître la diversité des échanges entre les Français nouvellement arrivés et les Montréalais de souche, et la conjugaison d'ambitions qui animaient un réseau. Dans cet enchevêtrement d'espoirs, du plus modeste au plus extravagant, Montréal, en marche vers le sommet de son influence comme métropole, prenait Paris comme modèle.
