Abstract
Les hommes d’affaires forment une partie du contingent des immigrants français présents à Montréal entre 1870 et 1914. Cet article examine la carrière des plus importants d’entre eux. Si des industriels émergent parmi les plus anciens, la majorité du groupe est formée de commerçants spécialisés surtout dans l’importation de produits français. À l’exception de quelques fratries, aucun mouvement organisé n’explique la venue de ces immigrants à Montréal. Celle-ci paraît être le résultat de décisions individuelles et les séjours sont d’une durée très variable. Originaires de diverses régions, ces hommes d’affaires n’en développent pas moins une vie communautaire dans leur ville d’adoption, notamment grâce à la Chambre de Commerce française de Montréal, créée en 1886. Les effectifs des hommes d’affaires français sont en progression au début du XXe siècle, un mouvement qui est stoppé net par le déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale.
