Abstract
S’appuyant sur une enquête de terrain réalisée dans deux quartiers centraux montréalais en transition socioéconomique — Hochelaga-Maisonneuve et Saint-Henri—Petite-Bourgogne —, cet article propose de suivre l’évolution récente du petit commerce à partir du vécu des commerçants. Il mobilise un corpus de 50 entretiens semi-directifs réalisés auprès de propriétaires d’établissements commerciaux de ces deux quartiers. L’analyse de ces entretiens permet, dans un premier temps, de faire ressortir la diversité des profils des commerçants en proposant une typologie de leur rapport au commerce tenant compte de leur position dans le cycle de vie, de leur situation familiale et de leur trajectoire professionnelle passée. Elle permet ensuite, dans un second temps, d’examiner leur rapport au quartier où ils tiennent boutique, en insistant sur les représentations antérieures et postérieures à leur établissement. Nous constatons ainsi que les trajectoires professionnelles et résidentielles des nouveaux commerçants sont mues par des considérations éthiques et esthétiques fortes, les rattachant plus nettement aux couches moyennes salariées dont plusieurs d’entre eux sont issus qu’à la petite bourgeoisie commerçante d’hier.
