Oublions les westerns. Durant trois siecles, l’Amerique du Nord a ete sillonnee, a l’echelle continentale, par des aventuriers de langue francaise. Coureurs de bois, trappeurs, interpretes, ces hommes, en quete de fourrures, se sont constamment meles aux Amerindiens. En partant sur la piste de dix voyageurs, natifs de la France ou du Canada, Gilles Havard fait surgir des scenes saisissantes : adoption d’un jeune Francais par des Iroquois du XVIIe siecle, pirogues chargees de peaux de castor ou de bison descendant la riviere Missouri, fetes du nouvel an empruntant aux ceremonies indiennes, retrouvailles lors des grandes haltes de caravanes? A travers ces destins hors du commun se dessine une autre histoire de la colonisation europeenne, occultee par le recit americain de la conquete de l’Ouest : une histoire d’echanges, de metissages, mais aussi de violences, dont les tetes d’affiche sont des Francais et des Amerindiens. Cet ouvrage explore une Amerique oubliee, fantome ? effacee des memoires, absente des livres d’histoire. S’appuyant sur des recits de voyage, les archives des deux continents et les temoignages de descendants, enrichi de cartes et d’images inedites, il donne vie a un monde jusqu’ici invisible.
