Abstract
Les religieux représentent une partie importante de l’immigration française au Canada, particulièrement au Québec. Entre 1880 et 1914, le gouvernement républicain pratique une politique anticongréganiste : cette politique explique-t-elle l’arrivée au Québec de 40 nouvelles congrégations françaises et de quelque 2 600 religieux ? D’où provenaient ces communautés et dans quelles régions du Québec se sont-elles établies ? Dans quels domaines œuvraient-elles surtout ? On discute aussi de l’influence des religieux français, de l’accueil qui leur fut réservé, de leur action dans le domaine intellectuel et religieux, et surtout de leur influence sur l’esprit public.
