Abstract
On a souvent reproché aux artistes inuit de vouloir satisfaire le goût des amateurs occidentaux et de se plier à des conceptions artistiques qui leur étaient étrangères. De telles critiques témoignent d’une perception essentialiste de la culture ainsi que de la prégnance d’un système binaire d’oppositions refoulant jusqu’à la possibilité d’une voie tierce, médiane ou conjointe. La négociation des contrastes accompagne pourtant bien des rencontres interculturelles, de même qu’elle collabore au processus d’appropriation et conduit à réaliser des choix signifiants. Cet article se propose d’examiner la manière dont les praticiens et les acteurs culturels inuit parviennent à composer avec les règles du marché occidental de l’art et à investir des notions allochtones tout en préservant certaines valeurs traditionnelles jugées essentielles.
