Abstract
Ce texte propose l’étude du mouvement migratoire des Français vers le Canada à partir de deux sources officielles. La première provient du ministère du Commerce qui a reçu pour mission de mettre en place la législation sur l’émigration. Ce corpus, fixé dès le Second Empire, est sommaire et demeure pratiquement inchangé sous la Troisième République. La seconde source est un document statistique publié par le ministère de l’Intérieur entre 1865 et 1881. Il présente l’intérêt de fournir quelques données générales sur le nombre de départs de Français vers le Canada entre ces dates. Ces sources prennent place dans un cadre réglementaire qui vise à décourager le mouvement d’émigration vers le Canada, comme le stipule de façon emblématique la circulaire Clemenceau de 1909.
