Abstract
À partir de sources brésiliennes, françaises, américaines et canadiennes, cet article se veut un essai de reconstitution d’un épisode migratoire de la France vers le Brésil en passant par les États-Unis et le Canada, épisode qui a laissé peu de traces. En 1875-1876, un groupe composé majoritairement de Français ayant résidé un temps à Montréal, est recruté par le consul brésilien de New York pour coloniser Benevides, dans la province de Pará, au nord du Brésil. Incluant aussi des Canadiens français et des anglophones nord-américains, les migrants ne demeurent pas longtemps dans la région. Bien qu’on ignore presque tout de leur sort, leur histoire fait ressortir la nécessité d’étudier la migration française dans une perspective hémisphérique autant qu’atlantique.
