Les interprétations et représentations de la notion de fonction chez les futurs enseignants de mathématiques au secondaire

Abstract
Ce memoire porte sur les interpretations et les representations de la notion de fonction chez les etudiants au baccalaureat en enseignement secondaire des mathematiques a l'Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM). Le but est de connaitre les representations de la fonction qu'ils privilegient pour accomplir plusieurs tâches : definir une fonction, en identifier une representation, associer deux representations, et transformer une representation, soit par traitement, soit par conversion, deux activites cognitives mentionnees par Duval (1995). En plus du point precedent, un interet particulier est accorde a la verbalisation de certaines interpretations de la fonction dans les reponses des participants. Enfin, les questions de recherche touchent les differences entre les futurs maitres en debut et en fin de formation. Un questionnaire a ete administre a 100 participants : 46 etudiants de 1ere annee, 25 etudiants de mi-parcours et 29 finissants. Il ressort que ces participants font appel a une variete de representations de la fonction selon la tâche a accomplir, principalement les representations verbales et graphiques. Par ailleurs, de nombreux participants de notre etude, particulierement les finissants, definissent la fonction par une interpretation, le plus souvent une relation de dependance, laquelle serait a privilegier selon Nicholas (1966). Ils se distinguent ainsi des participants de plusieurs etudes anterieures. Toutefois, ils articulent rarement plusieurs representations de la fonction pour resoudre un meme probleme, ce qui definit pourtant un haut niveau de comprehension de la fonction selon Hitt et al. (2001).
