Abstract
The direct or indirect incidence of lightning strikes on distribution lines is one of the major problems affecting the quality of electricity service, causing damage to transmission and distribution lines and fines for electric utilities. The event often causes unplanned shutdowns and it is important to understand how lightning strikes affect the distribution network. This work focuses on fundamental aspects of lightning strikes in distribution systems, addressing issues related to lightning frequency, overvoltage frequencies, wave propagation at distribution grid points and lightning currents. Information related to the EDP -SP concessionaire was addressed, such as the behavior of the electricity grid through lightning, the disconnection of existing equipment on the network and the impacts on consumer units supplied by these devices. The concepts involved in the analysis of lightning currents and the ways of relating these data to the occurrence of direct line discharges and induced surges are presented. In addition, concepts based on the relationship between the amount of discharges and the intensity of the lightning currents to which the lightning rods are subjected is presented. This work also consisted in the search for information about the main aspects involving the arresters, as well as their context of operation, in the most diverse existing technical-scientific databases and guided the technical aspects necessary to define the pilot area where they will be installed the lightning arresters and lightning counters.
