Proximité et innovation : le territoire est-il un déterminant absolu pour les PME?

La vive concurrence difficilement prévisible qui prévaut dans les différents espaces économiques oblige les PME à être beaucoup plus attentives aux besoins de leurs clients et aux réactions de leurs compétiteurs, pour pouvoir défendre ou protéger leur marché, ce qui leur demande d’être innovantes. Or, l’innovation est une activité qui fait appel à des ressources spécifiques qui ne sont pas toujours disponibles chez les PME. Ces dernières peuvent cependant compter sur des ressources externes pour combler leurs besoins. Celles-ci peuvent se trouver à proximité sur leur territoire, ou à l’extérieur de celui-ci selon son niveau de richesse. Est-ce à dire que les PME localisées sur des territoires moins nantis auraient moins de capacité d’innovation que les autres? L’étude des données d’un échantillon de PME québécoises localisées sur deux territoires distincts montre que les taux d’innovation ne sont pas différents, contrairement aux façons d’innover. Ces résultats nous invitent à prendre en compte la diversité des formes et intensités d’innovation pour comprendre ce dont ont besoin les PME pour accroître leurs capacités de créer de la nouveauté.
