Abstract
Depuis le milieu des années 1970, le travail indépendant a connu au Canada et au Québec une croissance marquée, en grande partie attribuable aux indépendants qui exercent seuls, sans l’aide d’employés. Si ces derniers possèdent de manière disproportionnée les attributs de la précarité, une réalité qu’ils déplorent, ils témoignent d’une quête de flexibilité et de liberté, aspects appréciés quoique inégalement concrétisés. L’article se propose de jeter un éclairage sur cet apparent paradoxe, grâce à une analyse croisée des mutations qui ont affecté, d’une part le salariat et, d’autre part, le travail indépendant.
