Abstract
This chapter explores the ways in which ideas about the performance of gender within the space of the Arctic are evoked in nineteenth-century British adventure tales set in the Canadian North. Through an empirical, case-study approach, it examines R. M. Ballantyne’s Ungava: A Tale of Esquimaux-Land (1858), which features a young girl as the protagonist. The chapter argues that while the book presents an expanded (albeit imagined) space of action for girls, the extent of their participation and presence in the Arctic is nonetheless limited by conventional gender strategies in both text and image.
