Abstract
Abstract A description is provided for Penicillium verrucosum . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Widely distributed in foods and feedstuffs. It is common in cereals in Europe and Canada (MILLS, 1990), as well as meat products (ANDERSEN, 1995), cheese (LUND et al. , 1995), and Madeira cake (CABI BIOSCIENCE, 1999). DISEASES: In man it has been implicated in Balkan Endemic Nephropathy, a kidney disease with a high mortality rate in certain parts of Bulgaria, Romania and states in the former Yugoslavia (PAVLOVIC et al. , 1979). In animals it causes nephritis in Scandinavian pigs, a serious problem in animal health (RUTQVIST et al. , 1978). A case of osteomyelitis in a German shepherd dog implicated P. verrucosum as the causal agent (WIGNEY et al. , 1990). GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION: Mostly in temperate regions, particularly N Europe.
