En la provincia de Cotopaxi, en la ciudad de Latacunga específicamente en la Universidad Técnica de Cotopaxi, en los estudiantes de primer semestre de la carrera de Diseño Gráfico existe un desconocimiento sobre la historia del diseño, sus teorías y fundamentos y al igual de una de las festividades populares y tradicionales de la ciudad que es la Mama Negra. Para fomentar el interés en las costumbres y tradiciones de la ciudad, lugar donde residen los estudiantes, se estableció realizar un estudio y análisis del personaje principal de la festividad, la Mama Negra y de su trajería que posee decoraciones y ornamentos distintivos cargados de simbolismo a los cuales se aplicó los movimientos, escuelas y técnicas propias de la historia del diseño para reinterpretar estructuras compositivas. Para el desarrollo de la parte grafica se usó una metodológica planteada de tres fases, con un tipo de investigación descriptiva transversal, con un diseño de investigación bibliográfico y de campo, basándose en la técnica de la observación y como instrumento fichas de observación trabajando con una muestra conformada por 37 estudiantes. Se obtiene como resultado estructuras compositivas basadas en la trajería del personaje Mama Negra, patrones ornamentales con acabados estilísticos que ayudan a recuperar nuestros valores e identidad cultural.
