Abstract
A marginalização, a pobreza, a destruição da família, a carência na educação, o fato de muitos crimes serem, para o delinquente, economicamente compensativos, são fatores que têm contribuído para que muitos tocantinenses se enveredem nos caminhos da criminalidade. Neste contexto, este trabalho realizou levantamento socioeconômico da população presidiária da região sul do Estado do Tocantins, cumulado à investigação de prováveis fatores que tenham relação direta com o ingresso dos indivíduos supracitados na atividade delitiva. O estudo apresenta o perfil da referida população carcerária e aponta os elementos facilitadores, assim como possíveis fatores ensejadores da criminalidade. Também busca indicar caminhos possíveis ao aprofundamento do exame da gestão das políticas públicas, com enfoque na prevenção à criminalidade, na tentativa de determinar e minimizar os problemas sociais relacionados à violência. Conclui que a prevenção e a repressão são essenciais ao combate à criminalidade, desde que associadas a políticas públicas voltadas à preservação da família, à redução das desigualdades e de inibição dos fatores, que tornam o crime economicamente viável.
