Abstract
Auteure d’une thèse en 2015 intitulée Devenir dépendant, approche sociologique du grand âge en institution, Valentine Trépied souligne dans cette conférence le glissement sémantique qui s’est opéré au cours des 50 dernières années entre le concept de « dépendance », qualificatif de la vieillesse « qui va mal », employé dans les années 1970, et celui, apparemment plus positif mais non dénué d’ambiguïté, d’« autonomie », à partir des années 2000. Elle a ainsi montré comment les EHPAD s’étaient emparés de la notion d’autonomie pour en faire un outil de communication, alors qu’il ressort de son travail de terrain au sein de ces établissements que l’injonction à l’autonomie y fonctionne comme un mirage. Les personnes âgées sont en effet soumises à des rythmes soutenus et uniformes qui ne leur sont pas adaptés, ce qui ne peut que placer les résidents dans une dépendance à l’égard des professionnels et les conduit un peu plus vers la perte de leur autonomie.
