This paper presents the results of an experiential investigation to study the influence of plastic and silty fines on the shear strength and porewater pressure (PWP) generation in Ottawa Sands. In order to have a better understanding of the generation and dissipation of PWP during undrained shearing, a novel PWP measurement system was designed to measure PWP at the center of a triaxial specimen. The percentage of plastic and non-plastic fines within the specimens was varied and the specimens were sheared in an undrained triaxial compression test at a constant small strain rate. Factors influencing the strength and the development of PWP (at center and end of specimens) such as relative density, skeletal void ratio, and the fines content along with their plasticity index were investigated.
