L’engagement des cégépiens en contexte de migration pour études : une réciprocité incontournable

Chaque année, plusieurs jeunes Québécois quittent leur région pour entamer des études collégiales. La migration pour études, c’est-à-dire un déplacement à plus de 80 kilomètres de son milieu d’origine, touche environ 15 % de la population collégiale (Richard, 2017). Outre la transition entre le secondaire et les études supérieures, l’intégration aux études collégiales pose de nombreux défis pour ces jeunes : éloignement, adaptation à un nouveau milieu, nouvelles responsabilités (tâches ménagères, repas, budget, etc.) et dynamique relationnelle en mouvance. À partir d’entretiens effectués auprès de migrants pour études à propos de leur parcours, de leur motivation, de leurs difficultés et des stratégies déployées pour surmonter les défis rencontrés, ce texte explore le sens et les formes d’engagement associées à cette expérience. Ces différentes manifestations sont décrites à travers trois composantes associées à la notion d’engagement académique : cognitive, affective et sociorelationnelle. L’analyse montre que les manifestations d’engagement de ces cégépiens dépassent largement le pari de la réussite scolaire. Migrer pour ses études collégiales pousse l’individu à s’engager dans différentes sphères de sa vie : académique, professionnelle et citoyenne. Enfin, cet article ouvre également la réflexion sur le caractère réciproque de la notion d’engagement en abordant le rôle des cégeps dans le processus d’intégration de ces jeunes.
