Platon exprime une grande méfiance envers la culture prise dans un sens anthropologique. On le voit clairement dans son traitement du récit imitatif. Cette méfiance se manifeste par une série de stratégies et de mécanismes de contrôle de la culture. De ce point de vue, Aristote est critique de Platon. Son regard pragmatique et anthropologique sur les productions culturelles et notamment sur les récits imitatifs, les présente comme des faits humains, j’aimerais dire, dans le langage de Wittgenstein, des « jeux de langage » insérés dans des « formes de vie ».
