Abstract
North American Free Trade Agreement’s (NAFTA) trade and related investment liberalizations were particularly important for smaller firms from smaller countries such as Canada, which depend increasingly on access to the larger United States market for much of their trade and GNP. The autonomous power of international institutions is further seen by examining the outcome of the cases according to their non-NAFTA or NAFTA-affected resolution. The importance of the NAFTA era can be further seen by examining the outcomes of those resolved cases in the post-NAFTA era which have been importantly dealt with through the NAFTA institutions. The mechanism for industry involvement, through the joint meetings of the Committee on Standards Related Measures with trilateral industry bodies, is a facilitator of success. The 1994 NAFTA and its accompanying North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation introduced an innovative, world leading regime for giving trade liberalization and environmental protection a more equal, integrated and mutually supportive place.
