Abstract
Infrastructures (energy, water, waste, transportation, and telecommunications) are preconditions for modern life, providing a foundation for economic and social development and meeting everyday needs. Infrastructure systems take on key importance in geography because of their critical role in coordinating human activities in space and time. Historically, different configurations of infrastructure, constructed to support changing political and social objectives, have profoundly influenced the organization of everyday life. In contemporary society infrastructures can be conceived as a critical conduit through which consumers become engaged with pressing concerns related to resource scarcity, environmental sustainability, and the need for sociotechnical resilience in the face of disruption.
