Machining/machinability of Rene 65 superalloy for aerospace applications

Abstract
Rene 65 is a newly developed nickel-based superalloy, introduced in production of jet engine disks and blades. In comparison with existing cast and wrought nickel superalloys, Rene 65 possesses improved thermo-mechanical loading properties such as; reduced cyclic fatigue, crack growth strength, creep rupture resistance, and greater ultimate yield tensile strengths. However, its behaviour during machining is still an on-going area of research. This study evaluates the machinability of this new superalloy during drilling and milling operations. Experimental cutting tests were conducted on Rene 65 to establish the machining challenges this superalloy faces. Cutting forces, tool wear and surface roughness were used to assess its machinability. The response surface method (RSM) was used to optimize the machining parameters in order to improve the machining conditions.
