Abstract
Cet article vise à démontrer la filiation historique entre les Innus contemporains et leurs ancêtres de la préhistoire. Projet inutile, peut-on croire, puisque la langue innue, qui est la même que celle du XVII e siècle, est toujours parlée de nos jours. Projet pertinent, néanmoins, parce que notre tradition historiographique affirme la disparition des Indiens. Quels furent donc les mécanismes 1) d’occultation de l’Autre chez les Euro-Canadiens et 2) de maintien dans le temps de la société innue ? Le ciment du monde innu n’a jamais résidé dans une organisation politique, mais dans la parenté et dans la cosmologie. Épidémies et raids guerriers ont durement éprouvé les Innus, mais à un degré probablement moindre que leurs voisins autochtones. Cette société a réagi en remembrant ses familles par l’adoption et l’assimilation des veufs, veuves et orphelins.
