Abstract
Abstract Canadian intercultural communication research is grounded in the dynamics of an officially bilingual and linguistically regionalized, immigrant‐receiving nation grounded in the ongoing dynamics of indigenous–settler relations. Current research addresses issues in intercultural communication across diverse domains (e.g., education, healthcare), including the role of group status and power in intercultural interactions; the development of linguistic, communicative and (inter)cultural competence; the reciprocal relation between identity and communication; and the challenges of establishing common ground. Emergent themes include greater attention to the context, particularly the dynamics of social networks; bi‐ and multicultural identities in everyday social situations; the interplay between language and culture acquisition; as well as positive and negative aspects of the communication process and its outcomes.
