Abstract
Tensions ethniques, antipathie entre soldats et citoyens, insuffisance de la présence policière, de multiples causes permettent d’expliquer la mort du soldat William Hands, le 23 avril 1835, à la suite d’une échauffourée impliquant quelques Canadiens, mais la signification de l’événement et de la controverse qu’il soulève se situe plutôt dans l’intensification des pressions politiques qui agissaient sur l’administration de la justice criminelle en 1835. L’importance politique du procès qui s’ensuivit était évidente, et les Patriotes mirent tout en oeuvre pour faire disculper les accusés, Édouard Monarque et Joseph Chapeleau, au moment où les autorités impériales lançaient une commission d’enquête sur les affaires du Bas-Canada.
