L’écriture de Nancy Huston se situe à l’intersection de plusieurs courants. Huston écrit à un moment où la littérature française redécouvre l’histoire et cultive la mémoire; à un moment où elle prend ses distances par rapport aux excès de la théorie du signe, et à un moment aussi où les « voix venues d’ailleurs » réclament le genre du roman et la langue française pour mettre en scène leur vision du monde et de l’histoire. Après un survol du vaste champ de réflexion portant sur l’histoire et la mémoire (A. et J. Assmann, H. Bhabha, P. Nora, R. Robin, M. Rothberg),L’empreinte de l’angesert à illustrer une écriture de l’histoire et de la mémoire inquiète et hésitante, visant à reconstituer des expériences partielles et à « comprendre ce qui s’est passé ».
