Abstract
L’Unesco est considérée comme un des principaux acteurs de l’antiracisme international qui émerge au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale. Pourtant, la « question raciale » n’est pas une priorité de l’institution au tournant des années 1940-1950 et celle-ci n’a jamais été en mesure de définir et de mettre en œuvre une politique claire et explicite sur le sujet. Une ethnographie historique des archives de l’Unesco à Paris, notamment au moment de la création et des premières réunions du Département des sciences sociales, révèle que ce dernier accueille les discussions sur la question raciale de façon souvent contrainte et improvisée. Loin du récit linéaire des origines de l’antiracisme, il convient donc d’insister plutôt sur l’indétermination constitutive de l’élaboration des programmes sur la race à l’Unesco entre 1946 et 1952.
