In the particulate, bubbling, and turbulent fluidization flow regimes, jets can form when gas is blown into the fluidized bed, forming a cavity where gas occupies more than 80 percent of the volume. This chapter discusses the role of jets as gas distributors and the criterion for uniform gas distribution in the fluidized bed. Gas distributors operate in either the bubbling regime, where gas bubbles form directly at the distributor, or the jetting regime, where pulsating jets from the distributor periodically release gas bubbles from their tip. In many fluidized beds, particle attrition mainly occurs in the distributor jets and at the cyclone inlet. Attrition associated with gas bubbles, far from the distributor, is usually much smaller than attrition caused by the distributor jets. The chapter also describes the formation of jets when solids or liquids are fed into a fluidized bed.
