Dans quelle mesure la culture contemporaine peut-elle s’observer sur internet ? Cet article propose d’analyser les commentaires aux vidéos YouTube de chasse aux fantômes dans une approche quali-quantitative, en mobilisant le cadre théorique de la sémiotique culturelle de Yuri Lotman. En s’appuyant sur les données publiques de quatre chaînes YouTube présentant des enquêtes paranormales dans des lieux dits hantés, l’analyse met en évidence les injonctions sociales et techniques (attendus sociaux, algorithme), les contributeurs communs à plusieurs chaînes, et la fonction sociale du commentaire. Les résultats montrent que le web paranormal est le lieu de la construction d’une actualisation expérientielle et ludique de la culture ancestrale de la communication avec les esprits. Départis de toute quête d’une vérité unique et indivisible, les chasseurs de fantômes du web et leurs abonnés investissent les technologies numériques comme nouveaux médiums d’une communication spirituelle vécue comme expérience concrète de la physique et des champs électromagnétiques.
