The bubbling flow regime begins at a superficial velocity. This chapter summarizes knowledge of the properties of bubbling beds gained from experimental and theoretical (including Computational Fluid Dynamics studies). It considers only cases where the volume-equivalent diameters of the bubbles are much smaller than the diameter or width of the column. Bubbles form in gas-fluidized beds due to the instability of the state of uniform fluidization. The chapter presents an analogy between bubbles in fluidized beds and those in liquids. It discusses the hydrodynamic properties of bubbles such as rising velocity, bubble wakes, and bubble breakup. The chapter also presents bubble interactions, and details the flow of gas by translation of bubbles in freely bubbling beds, the relation between the bubble diameter and height and gas velocity, the characteristic rising velocity of bubbles, and the radial nonuniformity of bubbles.
