Abstract
Bij handelsonderhandelingen treden altijd controverses op. Of dat nu gaat met duizenden tractoren in Brussel of met massale demonstraties zoals eind 1994 in New Delhi en Manilla omdat men vond dat de nieuwbakken WTO de soevereiniteit bedreigde, handelspolitiek geschiedt zelden volledig in pais en vree. Recente zorgen rondom TTIP en CETA, beoogde vrijhandelszones van de EU met respectievelijk de VS en Canada, laten zien dat de aard van de conflicten veranderd is. Ook tekent zich een ontluikende consensus voor het beleid af die nogal idealistisch van aard is, maar niet ideaal.
