Abstract
Le problème de la place envahissante de l’imaginaire au sein même de l’existence est l’un des axes directeurs de la philosophie de Sartre. Peut-on parler de vie imaginaire ou bien les images sont-elles trop pauvres pour cela ? Si la conscience est néant et si toute existence comprend une dimension irréductible de comédie, la vie même n’est-elle pas imaginaire ? Mais alors, si tel est le cas, cette vie est-elle vaine quête d’être, « passion inutile », liberté flamboyante ou difficile libération luttant et coopérant avec un imaginaire ambigu ? Nous nous proposons dans cet article de poser les jalons d’une réflexion sur ce problème, parcourons l’œuvre de Sartre selon ce fil directeur et analysons quelques moments clefs de la réflexion sartrienne sur l’imagination : le quatrième chapitre de L’imaginaire, intitulé « la vie imaginaire », l’étude de l’existence comme néant et comédie dans L’être et le néant, la morale du jeu et, enfin, l’instruction, dans L’idiot de la famille, du « cas » Flaubert, néanmoins archétypal, choisi par Sartre précisément parce que cet auteur a voué sa vie à l’imaginaire.
