Abstract
This article examines the experiences of Indigenous participants in performance traditions emerging from the timber industry, in the contexts of settler-colonial resource extraction and Algonquin resistance and cosmologies, in Kiji Sibi Algonquin territory. Decolonial performance histories of the Kiji Sibi/Ottawa River necessarily engage histories of early contact, logging, and the construction of hydroelectric dams and nuclear facilities. As the author asks what rivers remember, treating the river as a relative and living archive, she upturns stories suppressed by conventional archival materials. Following three vessels that have inscribed transit pathways along the river—jiimaan/canoe, timber crib, and steamboat—the author turns her eye to Indigenous knowledge systems as she deploys performance analysis to ask what it might have meant for her grandfather to participate in loggers’ shantwy entertainments.
