De 1948 à 1994 la domination de la Démocratie chrétienne a été celle d’un parti du centre qui regardait à gauche. De 1994 à 2013 le berlusconisme s’est comporté en droite démagogique qui regardait à droite et même très à droite. Depuis 2013 le salvinisme est une extrême droite qui regarde encore à droite. La politique dictée par Bruxelles l’a favorisé après avoir fait les beaux jours du Mouvement 5 étoiles. Depuis l’auto-dissolution du Parti communiste italien en 1991, la gauche de transformation sociale s’est fragmentée. Politiquement faible, elle existe sur le plan syndical et par l’engagement associatif.
