"Cross Purposes": Sensation Fiction, Focalization, and Christian Repentance in Good Words

Abstract
Once derided, sensation fiction has been critically recuperated over the past four decades; however, critics have largely viewed it as secular. Jennifer Phegley, Beth Palmer, and Julie Bizzotto have recently shown that Christian journals such as the Argosy and Good Words assimilated sensation fiction to serve their moral purposes. Building on their work, this article argues that Ellen Wood's Oswald Cray (1864) and Katherine Saunders's The High Mills (1871) repackaged sensation fiction for Good Words' Christian readers, creating sensational plots and mobilizing focalization techniques to urge the importance of self-restraint, self-reflection, and repentance.
