Abstract

Face aux enjeux environnementaux globaux, les approches contemporaines des éthiques environnementales sont mal adaptées. En assignant des valeurs morales à des êtres vivants ou des écosystèmes, elles indiquent un souci pour des enjeux locaux, voire régionaux. L’article défend un nouveau type de valeur morale. La valeur Gaïa s’appuie sur les enseignements de l’hypothèse Gaïa et des sciences du système Terre pour valoriser les processus physico-chimiques et biologiques qui contribuent à réguler et stabiliser les grands cycles biogéochimiques. Comme exemple d’application de la valeur Gaïa, l’article s’intéresse aux rôles des micro-organismes dans ces régulations. Alors que le microcosme est le véritable socle de la vie, l’article montre que nos cadres éthiques, même d’éthiques environnementales, ne permettent pas de valoriser le monde microscopique et ses contributions. Aucune espèce microscopique n’est protégée et les approches anthropocentriques, biocentriques ou écocentriques ne les valorisent pas ou peu. La valeur Gaïa entend remédier à cet état de fait, en soulignant les services biosphériques rendus par certains micro-organismes.
