The Impact of the Scaled-Down CMOS Technologies on the Step Response Degradation Caused by the Pole-Zero Doublets in the OTAs

Abstract
Over the past decades, the CMOS technology nodes have been reduced dramatically and beyond expectations. This dramatic reduction in the technology nodes opens the door for analog designers to reconsider some of the well-known findings in the field of Microelectronics. One of these findings is that designing CMOS Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTAs), while having a closed-loop Pole-Zero Doublet (PZD), is always detrimental to the step response of the OTAs. In this work, this conclusion is re-examined from a technology node perspective. Interestingly, it will be shown that as the technology node is decreasing, the presence of the PZD is no longer detrimental to the step response of the CMOS OTAs. This contradicts the well-known conclusion and paves the way to reconsider designing the OTAs while having PZDs.
