Abstract
Neste artigo, um dos tópicos das narrativas históricas sobre Brasília – a evocação das anteriores capitais Salvador e Rio de Janeiro – é o mote para retomar a formação inicial de cada uma delas e destacar distintas noções de capitalidade no Brasil entre os séculos 16 e 20. A partir da retomada da bibliografia e de uma seleção de documentos a respeito de Salvador, Rio de Janeiro e Brasília, o artigo busca destacar as especificidades de sua concepção e, ao fim, questionar a noção de suposta continuidade histórica entre elas.
