Cocaine-Associated Rhabdomyolysis in a Young, HIV-Positive Male: A Case Report

Abstract
Cocaine is a commonly used stimulant that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. While neuropsychiatric and cardiovascular sequelae are the most common effects of cocaine, many of cocaine's other toxicities are less well described, including rhabodymyolysis, myoglobinuria, and acute renal failure. These other sequelae of cocaine have been cited to represent as much as 5% of cocaine-related admissions to emergency departments across the United States, and thus warrant attention and consideration. In this report, we discuss a case of a young male with well-controlled Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), seeking treatment for acute-onset muscle pain following a single instance of intra-nasal cocaine use. La cocaïne est un stimulant fréquemment utilisé et qui est associé à une importante morbidité et mortalité. Alors que les séquelles neuropsychiatriques et cardiovasculaires sont les effets les plus communs de la cocaïne, beaucoup d'autres toxicités de la cocaïne sont moins bien décrites, y compris la rhabodymyolysis, la myoglobinurie, et l'insuffisance rénale aiguë. Ces autres séquelles de la cocaïne peuvent représenter jusqu’à 5% des admissions liées à la cocaïne aux services d'urgence à travers les États-Unis, méritant ainsi l'attention et l'intérêt. Dans ce rapport, nous discutons le cas d'un jeune homme avec une infection par le virus d'immunodéficience humaine (VIH) sous-contrôle et demandant un traitement pour douleur musculaire aiguë suite à une seule consommation de cocaïne intra-nasale.
